Well, it certainly hasn't been boring. Tigers season alone and the Coach Cal incident rocked my world - as evidenced in my past few posts - and I would have blogged about it, but it seemed wherever I went, and I mean WHEREVER I went, its all anyone could talk about. I wonder what the last time something so affecting happened here in Mempho. Whether you think its bad or stupid or whatever that people care so much about basketball around here, we do. Black, white, young, old, rich, poor - it is amazing the effect that these Tigers have on my community.

What else to report?
Last week I got a great dj gig from the Memphis Grizz for the Grand Opening of the Boys and Girls Club in what we call Nutbush - the area north of Summer & Highland. I have always wondered why they call it that...its not the Nutbush Tina Turner sang about, right?! Anyway, the gig was entertaining the youth while the grownups cut ribbons and did their thing.
DJ'ing for kids is tricky. They don't have the longest memories or attention spans, and they can be quite fickle. Plus, who the hell understands them or what they like?! The stuff i was into in 6th grade was retarded!!
But i did my homework and researched the top tracks on the pop and rap charts around here...having done the Grizz / kids dj thing a few times before, I was pretty well aware of their speed and taste - but some things never cease to amaze.
When you were in jr. high, did you know any dance routines? I don't mean like a cheer or The Kid n Play - I mean involved, hardcore, step by step dances? Well these kids are NOT playing. they are poppin, lockin, droppin it, bouncin it, flauntin it, and pushin it thees way and that. It is insane!
They do the birdwalk, the Cupid shuffle, they turn their swag on, and the stanky leg.....OH, the stanky leg. I could have put it on loop....Sunday I dj'd the Grizz's ticketholder appreciation perty at Putt Putt and got hit up for it 4 times. Thankfully my contact at the organization put down the "No Stanky Leg" mandate of just once.
My favorite was this one, where they let the kids have a showout on the dancefloor. The little girl in the center obviously rocked the joint - she was rockin, fuzzy boots and all. The little girl to her right was going off, too, though a little young to rule the floor just yet. But the one to watch is the little boy on the left. His Bill Cosby-ish shuffle (wiuth a dash of Chunk's Truffle Shuffle from Goonies) combined with his compulsion to fall to the ground and spin, made for the hilight of my evening.
Keep playing trivia for our tournament, but damn it gets frustrating...can you put these films in order? Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead, Encino Man, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, & Heathers?! Seriously, we lost it all on that one...
Anyway, I guess thats it fer now....getting tired - and we do like to get our crash on round hyah:

I know I'm getting old when I have no clue what "Stanky Leg" is! The little girls dancing gave me little tears in my eyes, making me want to unload my rather tremendous behind onto some unsuspecting dance floor. I'm sorry to hear that Coach Cal sold out... seems the almighty dollar is pretty powerful, but I'm sure the Tigers will rise again!!! Yay for a great run!
